“Instead of dreaming of being a teacher or a lawyer or a business leader, they’re fantasizing about being a baller or a rapper.”– First lady Michelle Obama, delivering the commencement address in Maryland on Friday to Bowie State University, an historically black university.

So what’s prompting the first lady to shower New Jersey’s Republican governor with praise? I have a theory…
Chris Christie, despite his current unpopularity with the GOP’s most-conservative, could still be a force to be reckoned with in 2016. My guess is that Democrats know Christie is one of the only Republicans who could take on (and steamroll over) Hillary Clinton in a potential debate match-up.
Call me crazy, but I’m wondering if Dems aren’t trying to keep their enemies close on this one… and in the process, help further divide Christie from the GOP’s conservative base. After all, what could be more damning for a GOP presidential hopeful than for his primary opponents to run ads featuring images like this?

Filed under News | Comment (0)Diana Reese, a freelance journalist based in Kansas, listened to Michelle Obama deliver a speech at a Wal-Mart in Springfield, Mo., yesterday. The speech was about healthy eating and Wal-Mart’s hand in making healthy food available at a low cost, but all Reese could think about was: Why this Wal-Mart?
She writes in the Washington Post:
Of all the Wal-Marts, in all the towns, in all the world, first lady Michelle Obama on Thursday walked into the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market in this southwest Missouri college town where a battle has raged over whether to allow the chain to build a store in the historic downtown. …
[T]he event felt too much like a commercial for Wal-Mart, which has come under fire nationally for its treatment of workers and locally in Springfield for its plans to build a Neighborhood Market in an historic downtown neighborhood. (No one could answer the question why Springfield got the nod as the Wal-Mart for Obama’s visit.)
Unsolved mystery.

Obama Hat-Wearing Anti-Gun Protester Says She’d Rather Be Murdered Than Use a Gun in Self-Defense
Filed under News | Comment (0)Michelle Obama has been on a media tour (plus a pause to present an Oscar award) the last two weeks promoting her “Let’s Move!” health campaign.
The Wall Street Journal‘s Peggy Noonan doesnt’ like it. Not one bit. In her column today, she even sounds a little scared:
Michelle Obama is omnipresent—dancing with Jimmy Fallon, chatting with Rachel Ray, on “Good Morning America” talking about the kids and another show talking about the bangs. On ABC she accidentally said something factually incorrect, and they thoughtfully edited it out. Mrs. Obama’s presence reached its zenith, one hopes, Sunday night at the Academy Awards when she came on, goofily star-struck military personnel arrayed in dress uniforms behind her, to announce the Best Picture award. It was startling and, as she gave her benediction—the movies “lift our spirits, broaden our minds, transport us to places we can never imagine”—even in a way disquieting.
… It seemed to me an expression of this White House’s lack of hesitation to insert itself into any cultural event anywhere. And this in a 50-50 nation, a divided nation that in its entertainments seeks safety from the encroachments of politics, and the political.
“I miss Michelle Obama’s early years,” Noonan says, “when she was… Continue reading »
Filed under News | Comment (0)Continuing the current leg of her “Let’s Move!” campaign at McCormick Place convention center in Chicago today, Michelle Obama said she doesn’t pay attention to those who have criticized her recent high-profile media appearances.
From a pool report by the New York Times‘ Jennifer Steinhauer:
Criticism of her media appearances – which intensified in recent weeks – doesn’t bother her, she said, chalking it up to a modern media era. “I don’t think about that stuff,” she said.
“There’s no logic in that, she said, adding “It doesn’t have anything to do with me. Anyone in this position has a huge spotlight and in modern day media the spotlight just gets more intense. I don’t attribute this to me or Barack. The culture has just shifted.”
A mild controversy brewed over Obama’s recent appearance at the Academy Awards via satellite from the White House. Since last week, she’s also been featured on… Continue reading »
Filed under News | Comment (0)Presenting Courtland Milloy, a columnist for the Washington Post who often writes about issues affecting minorities. Today, Milloy says Michelle Obama should be doing so much more than presenting an Oscar. So much more:
Enough with the broccoli and Brussels sprouts — to say nothing about all the attention paid to her arms, hair, derriere and designer clothes. Where is that intellectually gifted Princeton graduate, the Harvard-educated lawyer and mentor to the man who would become the first African American president of the United States? …
She ought to be under consideration for a seat on the Supreme Court, not recruited as a presenter in some Hollywood movie contest.

Filed under News | Comment (0)Full disclosure: I pride myself on the fact that I didn’t watch the Oscars last night. In general, I feel no need to watch celebrities in Hollywood get all dressed up to celebrate and honor… themselves. What a cause.
That said, I’ve seen the news clips of first lady Michelle Obama’s cameo and commentary about her wardrobe, so I feel like I’m all up-to-speed. I tend to agree with WaPo’s Jennifer Rubin who doesn’t complain that Obama “hijacked” or “crashed” the show, but rather points out how weird and unnecessary it was:
It is not enough that President Obama pops up at every sporting event in the nation. Now the first lady feels entitled, with military personnel as props, to intrude on other forms of entertaining (this time for the benefit of the Hollywood glitterati who so lavishly paid for her husband’s election). I’m sure the left will holler that once again conservatives are being grouchy and have it in for the Obamas. Seriously, if they really had their president’s interests at heart, they’d steer away from encouraging these celebrity appearances. It makes both the president and the first lady seem small and grasping. In this case, it was just downright weird.
No one, it seems, gets within a mile of the White House with any sense of restraint. No one there would dare suggest nearly half the country didn’t vote for him and doesn’t much like him and might want to be left to their small daily pleasures. (Greta Garbo said it best.) And no one there is apt to explain that the White House, the military and the first lady (not this one in particular) are institutions bigger than the Obamas and their e-mail list.
Still, it would have been grand if the lefty-maligned “Zero Dark Thirty” (which showed the nasty interrogation techniques her husband deplored) had won Best Picture. Unfortunately, that sort of perfect karma happens only in the movies.
